The cover features The St. Johns Bridge, Portland’s only suspension bridge. Work on the bridge began one month before the stock market crash of 1929. During the bridge’s two-year construction, workers considered themselves fortunate to have jobs building it. The Gothic-style bridge took 21 months to build and was dedicated in 1931. On dedication day, bridge designer David B. Steinman said, “We believe the St. Johns Bridge is our crowning achievement from the standpoint of beauty, economical construction and scientific design.”
